Originally, the mission of the SADD chapter was to help young people say "No" to drinking and driving. Today, the mission has expanded. Students have told us that positive peer pressure, role models and other strategies can help them say "No" to more than drinking and driving. And that is why SADD has become a peer leadership organization dedicated to preventing destructive decisions, particularly underage drinking, other drug use, impaired driving, teen violence and teen depression and suicide.

SYBCG Welcomes Sensei David Drawdy and Mugai Ryu Iaihyodo

The San Yama Bushi and Combination Goju School of Self Defense welcomes Sensei David Drawdy to the Dojo. Sensei Drawdy will be offering instruction in Mugai Ryu Iaihyodo. Mugai Ryu is a koryu Japanese sword martial art, founded in 1693, based on two even older styles and a strong foundation of Zen philosophy. It is an iai system, where techniques begin from a draw and end by sheathing the sword. Modern Mugai Ryu is 'cutting iai', which means the techniques are meant to be effective. This is not the Mugai Ryu popularized by Darrell Craig. They are a study group authorized under the Meishi-ha of Niina-Gosoke, 9th dan hanshi, designated 16th soke of the style. He heads the Suimokai, which also incorporates the arts of Shin Muso Ryu jodo and Uchida Ryu tanjojutsu. The style in the US is led by Tony Alvarez-sensei of the Senpokan dojo in Costa Mesa California. This study group is led by Dave Drawdy, dojo-cho of the Virginia Kenshinkai, which also trains in Nakamura-ryu Batto-do.

Students will begin by learning basic individual forms using an iaito (unsharpened practice sword) and paired forms using a bokken (wooden practice sword). Those interested in training are invited to watch a full class prior to discussing membership. Classes are currently held Tuesdays from 7:30-9:30 at our SYBCG dojo in Virginia. Contact Sensei Drawdy at drawdyd@hotmail.com for details.

January 2006

Get Fit, Stay Motivated

San Yama Bushi and Combination Goju would like to wish everyone a happy holiday season. When considering New Years resolutions, the one that comes up time and time again is fitness. This is the year to get in shape. The problem is a standard exercise regimen can often become tedious. When tedium sets in, it is often hard to maintain a fitness program. Training in the Martial Arts is a challenging and ever changing experience. It is also one of the best all around exercise programs there is. The Martial Arts provide strength, cardiovascular and flexibility training while helping to condition the spirit as well. If you would like to get fit without getting bored come by the Dojo or call/email Sensei Z for details.
